Nitric Oxide Boosts, Best Supplements, Amino Acids, and Protein
Welcome to the Ask Dr. Cohen series, part #4!
Got a question? Use this form or the chat button to have your question(s) answered in a future article.
Can I take citrulline instead of beet juice for a nitric oxide boost?
Thanks for the inquiry, Terry. The short answer: not if you want the real benefits. Products like Swiss RX are basically just citrulline with a touch of polyphenols—nothing special. If you’re looking for a more effective nitric oxide support, I recommend combining Nitrosigine® with beet nitrates. The best sources come from:
Beet-based nitrates provide more consistent and lasting nitric oxide support compared to standalone citrulline.
Is FundAminos a complete protein support?
FundAminos isn’t just one amino acid—it’s a blend of four different formulations designed for flavor, taste, and health/performance goals. It’s one of the most complete amino acid supplements available. However, for true protein support, you also need collagen.
That’s why we pair FundAminos with PureClean Protein. FundAminos delivers rapidly absorbed essential amino acids (EAAs) for muscle and recovery, while PureClean Protein adds complete collagen peptides for connective tissue support.
What supplements do Dr. Cohen and family use daily?
Our foundational routine is built on complete, mitochondrial-focused support. Here’s what we take regularly:
- PureClean Protein and ChocoBerry Blast with frozen berries and C8 MCT oil
- FundAminos essential amino acids with 15 mg methylene blue added
- Adrenal salt blend (500 mg sodium from pink salt, 500 mg potassium carbonate, 400 mg vitamin C from camu powder)
- 800 mg magnesium daily (glycinate, malate, and topical spray)
- Beef liver capsules with 4 mg copper added
- Bee pollen (1 tsp daily)
- Sea veggie blend (food-based or Swanson Sea Veggies capsules)
- Cod liver oil (Rosita, Jigsaw Health, or Garden of Life) — none spike synthetic vitamin A
- Whole vitamin C complex (500 mg from amla, acerola, or camu)
- Gamma E capsule (1 daily)
- UVB light box (10 minutes every 3 days)
- Near infrared light (30 minutes daily)
- Blood donation every 8–12 weeks to keep ferritin near 30
For red blood cell optimization, I add hypoxic training on an indoor CAROL bike. Jackie, who is actively racing, follows a more varied program.
These are our personal essentials for mitochondrial function, resilience, and performance. They’ve been working well for us.
