Mercury-Smart Seafood Choices
Mercury enters the food chain via mining, fossil fuel combustion, and pesticides. Choose lower-mercury fish routinely and avoid regular intake above ~0.050 ppm. Approximate averages: Swordfish 0.995; Bigeye tuna 0.689; Albacore 0.358; Yellowfin 0.354; Skipjack 0.144; Light tuna 0.126; Salmon 0.022; Anchovies 0.017; Sardines 0.013; Oysters 0.012; Scallops 0.003; Shrimp 0.001 ppm. When choosing tuna, opt for SafeCatch Skipjack (typically <0.100 ppm). If you’ve tested positive for mercury and have amalgams, consider a biological dentist via IAOMT. AVOID routine high-mercury species.
Home Cleaning: Lower-Toxin Defaults
Preferred brands include Seventh Generation, Common Good, Ecos, Ecover. Budget standbys like lemon juice, baking soda, Borax®, and vinegar remain effective; Dr. Bronner’s covers general cleaning, and Murphy’s Oil Soap supports wood floors.
Ventilate when using any chemical cleaner: create cross-breeze with two open windows and a fan for at least an hour post-clean until odors resolve.
Household Exposures to Rethink
Dry-cleaned clothing can off-gas perchloroethylene (perc); air garments thoroughly. Limit chlorine bleach exposure and consider home filtration where municipal chlorine is high. Wash new clothes twice and new bedding three times before use; avoid synthetic fragrances and conventional air fresheners. Replace vinyl shower curtains with fabric; prefer low-VOC paints and finishes.
Cookware, Utensils, and Storage
Discontinue aluminum and non-stick Teflon™; favor stainless steel, cast iron, glass, or ceramic-coated cast iron. Use stainless utensils; replace foil-based baking with unbleached parchment or a PFOA-free pan. Avoid aluminum cans/bottles where possible. Be cautious with low-cost glazed dinnerware; consider unglazed, high-fired porcelain or stoneware. Skip Styrofoam for any food or drink. Store food in glass; never heat in plastic and avoid storing acidic foods in plastic. If plastic is unavoidable, prefer HDPE #2 or #4.
Textiles, Garden, and Pets
Choose organic cottons and fabrics; prewash new apparel and linens. Use non-toxic pest control in garden spaces and safer shampoos, collars, and treatments for pets.
