What is Dirty Electricity?

Dirty electricity, or "electrical pollution," is a prevalent health issue in urban areas. It is invisible and difficult to detect, causing various symptoms like headaches and difficulty focusing, known as electrohypersensitivity or EHS. Understanding its causes and effects is crucial. Electrical energy flows into our devices, converting into heat, light, sound, motion, pressure, radiation, or a mix of these. Any remaining electricity returns to the breaker panel through the neutral line.

On a standard electrical plug, you may notice one blade is smaller than the other. The small blade provides power to the device, while the larger blade completes the circuit. The third prong is the ground, which reduces the risk of electric shock. Starting from 2017, neutral should not be connected to grounded enclosures according to the National Electrical Code.

When you turn on a vacuum cleaner, it can cause interference with other electronic devices. For example, your TV may show a line or your stereo speakers may make a popping sound. This happens because the electrical current from the vacuum flows through the wires in the wall to the outlet, then to the vacuum motor, and finally back out through the common line that is shared by the TV and stereo. This "dirty electricity" from the vacuum motor affects the TV and stereo through the common line. In fact, all the common lines in your home or office are connected on the same common bar in your breaker panel, so any circuit in your home can affect any other circuit.

The other half of your outlets are on phase B, receiving power from the B phase and returning it through the neutral wire.

In general, if you are going to use a plug-in EMF Eliminator, we recommend that you place one unit on a Phase A circuit and one unit on a Phase B circuit. It is best to place these on the circuits that draw the most power or create the worst harmonics.

What Is EMF?

Common household appliances, cables, wires, and fixtures produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that may have health risks. Many people want reassurance about the safety of themselves and their families, as scientists debate the potential dangers of EMFs. EMFs are created by the electromagnetic radiation generated when electricity flows. These distortions can be noticed as buzzing, clicking, or hissing sounds when appliances like refrigerators or AC units turn on. Almost every electrical device produces these distortions, leading to the presence of EMFs. The outdated power grid in America also contributes to these distortions. Electricity accounts for two thirds of energy used in homes, businesses, and industries. With the demand projected to double in the next forty years, there are currently nearly 2 million miles of power lines reaching every building in the country.

How Dirty Electricity Gets To You

Understanding electricity is important. It's surprising how often people misunderstand basic principles, even those who claim to know. Let's start with the basics: electricity is the flow of electrons. When electrons flow through a wire, object, or device, we call it an electrical circuit. Voltage is the push that makes electrons flow, similar to how water pressure makes water flow through pipes in your home. A D-cell battery has a voltage of 1.5 volts, while a typical US house power outlet has a voltage of 120 volts AC. Current measures the number of electrons passing through a circuit in a period of time. Current only flows when there is voltage pushing it, much like water pressure causing a certain number of gallons per minute to flow. This current is measured in amperes (amps). Electricity can be either AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current). DC means the voltage is constant, like a battery. AC means the voltage is constantly changing, both in amplitude and direction-of-flow (polarity).

What is the connection between dirty electricity and your building's wiring? Dirty electricity is an alternating current (AC) voltage that flows through the wiring in your home. It has a higher frequency than the standard power line frequency of 50Hz or 60Hz. In fact, dirty electricity can range from a few thousand Hz to millions of Hz.

How does dirty electricity reach you? Since you're not touching the power lines directly, it's important to understand that electrical circuits have electric fields and magnetic fields. These fields radiate into space, and in the case of dirty electricity, they travel from the wiring to you.

Induction is when a conductor near a changing electric field gets a voltage or current. So, when you're around dirty electricity, it creates a changing field that results in a voltage or current in your body because your body conducts electricity.

During sleep, unplug all electronic devices. Use a battery-operated alarm clock and avoid sleeping with an electric blanket. Most radio frequencies are in the hundreds, thousands, millions, or billions of cycles per second range. RF can transmit data through specialized antennas and transmitters using electromagnetic fields. Many technologies, including mobile phones, remote controls, microwave ovens, computers, smart home devices, satellites, and transceivers, rely on RF to send and receive data. Bluetooth and wireless Lans also use RF.

Can RF Radiation Harm People?

The FCC says that studies have found that the amount of RF energy that people are usually exposed to in the environment isn't enough to cause significant heat or raise body temperature. However, there may be circumstances, especially in workplaces near strong RF sources, where the recommended safe limits for RF energy exposure could be surpassed. In those situations, it may be necessary to take steps to restrict or reduce the use of RF energy to ensure safety.

RF Range

The radio frequency spectrum was given a formal naming structure by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in the 1800s. The language that designates each band in the spectrum is very specific and should be used carefully. The RF spectrum is as follows:

• Tremendously low frequency (TLF): < 3Hz

• Extremely low frequency (ELF): 3-30 Hz

• Super low frequency (SLF): 30-300 Hz

• Ultra-low frequency (ULF): 300-3000 Hz (3 kHz)

• Very low frequency (VLF): 3-30 kHz

• Low frequency (LF): 30-300 kHz

• Medium frequency (MF): 300-3000 kHz (3 MHz)

• High frequency (HF): 3-30 MHz

• Very high frequency (VHF): 30-300 MHz

• Ultra-high frequency (UHF): 300-3000 MHz (3 GHz)

• Super high frequency (SHF): 3-30 GHz

• Extremely high frequency (EHF): 30-300 GHz

• Tremendously high frequency (THF): 300-3000 GHz (3 THz)

As indicated in the list above, one kilohertz (kHz) is equal to 1,000 hertz (Hz), one megahertz (MHz) is equal to 1,000 kilohertz, one gigahertz (GHz) is equal to 1,000 megahertz, and one terahertz (THz) is equal to 1,000 gigahertz.

Studies have given some insight into the possible effects on our brains and the developing brains of children. Our brain cells communicate through chemicals that become electricity. Artificial EMFs can interfere with this process and potentially alter our brains. Occasional WiFi exposure may not be harmful, but cumulative exposure over a lifetime could be concerning. Additionally, we should also consider other types of radiation such as electric, magnetic, and dirty electricity.
