Have you ever wondered why certain health remedies work for some people and not for others?

The simple answer is because we are all unique—and uniquely influenced by our environments.

You are born with a certain body type, largely determined by your genes. Yet external factors in your life can affect how your genes are expressed over the course of your development. The study of this phenomenon is called epigenetics. Everything in your life can affect your genes – where you live, the environment you live in, the foods you eat or don’t eat, the nutrients you have access to, the climate you live in, your mental state and the way that your brain functions, the air your breathe, the water you drink, the experiences you have, and the people you interact with. All of these external elements actually affect the way that your genes are expressed.

So knowing your genes is one thing, and knowing the expression of your genes is completely different!

Imagine you have an identical twin with the same genetic material as you. If you and your twin are separated at birth and have completely different upbringings, you may end up physically and genetically different in the long run. For example, if you were malnourished as a child but your twin was fed well, the same genes you both have may be expressed differently.

Finding out the details of your genetic profile has become increasingly popular today in the effort to prevent disease. While it is valuable to know whether or not you have certain genes that may predispose you to disease, it is even more valuable to know how those genes are being expressed. The way a gene is expressed will then affect your body, your heart, your nerves, your hormones, and all your physiological systems.

Most importantly, science has now proven that you can change the expression of your genes. Knowing that you carry a predisposition “in your genes” is no longer the be all and end all. You then need to measure the expression of those genes. How?

In the simplest terms, your genes are written all over your body. They’re expressed in the way your face looks, the texture of your hair, the color of your skin and your eyes, and the shape of your nose. They’re written in the ratios that your body holds – the length of your leg compared to the size of your waist, the circumference of your head compared to the length of your hands, and many more.

The study and scientific assessment of your body’s measurements is called anthropometry. Scientists have been measuring the body and studying different body types and sizes for thousands of years. In fact, hundreds of years ago anthropometry was used as a basis for ancient medicine. Today’s current anthropometric revolution began around the turn of the 20th century, when Italian medical professionals started to use this science in medical diagnostics.
