FUNDAMINOS vs Dietary Protein: And the Winner is?

Posted by Dr. Rick Cohen on Aug 1st 2019

Aging and stress—both mental and physical—can damage both the structural proteins and mitochondria the energy production centers of the human body. In order to repair and recover, the body needs the right balance of all eight essential amino acids (EAA) to ensure that your body has fundamental building blocks it needs to succeed!

While you can certainly obtain the needed essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein) from a wide range of dietary proteins using a properly balanced essential amino acids food has significant advantages.

Introducing the contenders:

In the left-hand corner, we have an assortment of   dietary proteins that include animal meat, eggs,   dairy, grains, nuts, legumes, and protein powders.

In the right-hand corner, we have FUNDAMINOS, a complete essential amino acid formula that directly supports energy production, muscular strength, and physical recovery.

Round 1: Taste
Protein: It is hard to beat the taste of poached eggs, grass-fed beef burgers, grilled salmon, roasted chicken; or vegan options like falafel and five-bean chili.

FUNDAMINOS: Left unflavored, essential amino acids are very bitter. Even though naturally-flavored FUNDAMINOS is the best-tasting essential amino acid formula on the market, it can't compete with the taste of real food.

Winner: Protein

Round 2: Convenience
Protein: Grilled salmon, poached eggs, and hamburgers don’t travel well; and they aren’t very appealing prior to, during, or immediately following a hard workout. And while protein powders (egg, whey, rice, or hemp) are convenient, they can be difficult to hand mix and hard to digest prior to or during physical activity.

FUNDAMINOS: Add water, stir or shake lightly, and you are good to go. No refrigeration is required.

Round 3: Absorption
Protein: In order for the body to utilize the essential amino acids found in dietary protein, it must enzymatically digest and absorb it. Not only does this process take a number of hours to complete, it's an inefficient one for many. Gastrointestinal health issues, age, illness, stress, and amino acid imbalances can deplete enzymatic and digestive activity; this means that most people don’t adequately digest and absorb the amino acids found in their food. Even the more rapidly-absorbed protein powders require digestion and absorption, so they fall short when it comes to providing an adequately supply of all eight EAA's.

FUNDAMINOS: Since FUNDAMINOS is not a protein, but a comprehensive blend of essential amino acids, it requires no digestion. When taken alone on an empty stomach, it is almost 100% absorbed within 25 minutes, regardless of your age and/or health status.

Round 4: Food Sensitivity
Protein: Due to the large size of the protein molecules, people with gastrointestinal or immune imbalances frequently develop sensitivities or allergies to many dietary proteins including eggs, dairy, soy, whey, nuts, beef, chicken, and fish.

FUNDAMINOS: Since FUNDAMINOS is not a protein, it doesn't cause allergic reactions.

Round 5: Nutritional Content
Protein: Whole foods and many protein powders also contain fats, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

FUNDAMINOS: Consists only of essential amino acids and natural flavorings. Its intended use is to provide a highly-effective and complete source of amino acids to meet the body’s requirements for optimal energy, recovery, and performance. It's meant to supplement a healthy, whole-food diet.

Round 6: Biological Value (BV)
BV is a measurement that describes the proportion of absorbed, dietary protein that actually becomes assimilated by the body; it provides a metric that allows us to compare how readily proteins can be used. BV does not take into account how easily a food is digested or absorbed. So a food can have a high BV, but not easily digested or absorbed and, as a result, ineffective as an essential amino acid source.

Protein: Whey protein and whole eggs have close to 100% BV. While meat, chicken, fish, and vegan options such as nuts, grains, meat, fish, and chicken are between 70 to 80%.

FUNDAMINOS: Has a 100% BV and is rapidly and completely absorbed.

Round 7: Anabolic vs Catabolic (NNU)
Net Nitrogen Utilization (NNU) is a measure of what percent of a substance's amino acids content is actually used anabolically (for growth and recovery) to create other proteins. A protein may have a high BV but a low NNU value, which means that most of its amino acid content is not being utilized well.

Protein: Dietary proteins have an NNU between 16 and 35% with eggs being the highest and protein powders being the lowest. This means that up to 85% of the amino acids in dietary proteins are not used for their intended, anabolic purposes (growth and repair); they are being burned for energy.

FUNDAMINOS: 99% of the amino acids in FUNDAMINOSare used anabolically. Only 1% is broken down and burned by following a catabolic pathway.

Round 8: Calories
Protein: Has 4 calories per gram.

FUNDAMINOS: At .04 calories per gram or less than ½ calorie per 10 gram serving, FUNDAMINOS is considered calorie free.

Round 9: Contraindications
Protein: Choices and quantity are limited for vegans, those who have impaired digestion, food sensitivities, kidney, or liver disease.

FUNDAMINOS: Because it's a vegetable-derived, protein-free formula with a 99% nitrogen retention, FUNDAMINOS is a perfect protein replacement for almost everyone (there are a small percentage of people with genetic amino acid disorders who should not use the product).

Round 10: Purity
Protein: Many protein sources are raised in factory farms with antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, heavy metals, artificial flavors, and GMO ingredients.

FUNDAMINOS: Is derived from pure vegetable sources and flavored with organic, GM0-free ingredients.

We have a winner!
FUNDAMINOS is the winner of our 10-round fight. In fact, it knocks dietary protein down for the count! When compared "head to head" with dietary protein, it's THREE to FIVE times more effectively used by the body for energy, growth, and recovery.

The battle recap:
While it's possible to exist (or even thrive) without dietary protein by relying on an essential amino acid source, foundational amounts are necessary for the enjoyment and nutritional density they provide.

But due to digestion and absorption variations, its use for specific health and fitness purposes are limited. In addition, large amounts of daily dietary protein (over 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight) require the body to expend a considerable amount of energy to process, digest, and excrete. High protein intake has been linked to rapid aging and the onset of chronic disease.

On the other hand, due to its convenience, rapid absorption, and efficie
nt utilization, FUNDAMINOS can be used for achieving an almost-unlimited range of health and fitness-related goals such as increased strength, energy, fat loss, recovery, appetite suppression, deeper sleep, cold thermogenesis, intermittent fasting and more. Stay tuned. These goals will be the topic of my third and final post in this series.
